intrinsic smoothness estimation

Hey,

as far as I know DPABI estimates the smoothness of the data based on de 4D residuals. Where can I find a paper on this estimation procedure used in DPABI or find out how to estimate the intrinsic smoothness respectively?

Actually, the smoothest algorithm is based on FSL's smoothest.
 
I agree that estimation of 1mm smoothness should has some problems.
