Sample Size

Total: N = 20 (10 females, age range 10-24 years)

Inclusion criteria: No history of neurological and psychiatric disorders and never participated in any MRI experiment before.

 

Scan procedures and Parameters

MRI scanning

Briefly, the participants first underwent an EC resting-state scan session. Then, the following four sessions, three for resting-state and one for task state, were acquired and counterbalanced across the participants: 1) EC, 2) EO, 3) EO-F (Eyes open with a fixation), and 4) a fast event-related visual response task. Finally, there was a block-designed task session. Each of the six sessions lasted for eight minutes. During the three resting-state sessions, the participants were instructed to keep as motionless as possible and not to think systematically. During the EO-F session, the participants were instructed to fixate on the black crosshair in the center of a white screen. Immediately after each scanning session, the experiment operator had a short communication with the participants. All participants reported that they had not fallen asleep during the scan. The two task- related sessions (event-related and block-designed) were not analysed in the above studies.

 

Image Acquisition

MRI data were acquired using a SIEMENS TRIO 3-Tesla scanner in the Beijing Normal University Imaging Center for Brain Research. The participants lay supine with the head snugly fixed by straps and foam pads to minimize head movement. The functional images were obtained using an echo-planar imaging sequence with the following parameters: 33 axial slices, thickness/gap = 3/0.6 mm, in-plane resolution = 64 × 64, TR = 2000 ms, TE = 30 ms, flip angle = 90º, FOV = 200 × 200 mm. In addition, a T1-weighted sagittal three-dimensional magnetization-prepared rapid gradient echo (MPRAGE) sequence was acquired, covering the entire brain: 128 slices, TR = 2530 ms, TE = 3.39 ms, slice thickness = 1.33 mm, flip angle = 7º, inversion time = 1100 ms, FOV = 256 × 256 mm, and in-plane resolution = 256 × 192.

I can only find 5 sessions of functional data in this dataset.

But it is described that there are 6 sessions of functional data (correct me if I'm wrong):

first a resting-state EC, followed by three sessions of resting-state EC, EO, EO-F, and a fast event-related visual response, and a block design task session.

 

And why do we need two sessions of ECImg?
